What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is considered when the patient is in pain. A toothache is considered a dental emergency. A swollen face is considered a dental emergency. If your gums are bleeding, that is considered a dental emergency. And of course, a broken tooth or a cracked tooth is also considered a dental emergency.
When do you need to go to the emergency room or schedule an appointment?
A dental emergency, as I mentioned previously, is when the patient has a toothache and has swelling or bleeding gums. If that's the case, when you have a toothache, of course, that's considered a dental emergency, and you will give us a call.
Now, if you do have a trauma that is affecting your breathing and your teeth are broken, then you need to go to the ER. If your gums are bleeding, but you're not in pain, we invite you to give us a call and schedule an appointment, and we for sure are going to get you in as soon as possible.
What are common dental emergencies?
Common dental emergencies: toothache, pain, broken teeth, cracked teeth, bleeding gums, infection, swelling, abscess. All of those are considered dental emergencies.
What can be done for a dental emergency?
Of course, we are going to make sure that we use all the diagnostic tools, including dental X-rays. We're going to do a clinical exam, and we're going to make sure that we get you out of pain. If a tooth is broken or is severely decayed, you might need an extraction. Or if your nerve, or the nerve of the tooth, is swollen and you're in extreme pain, you might need a root canal. But for sure, we're going to help you out.
When does a dental extraction become an emergency?
A dental extraction becomes an emergency, usually when the tooth is severely destroyed, broken, abscessed, infected, and what we consider a nonrestorable tooth.
Why might a patient need an emergency root canal?
Sometimes cavities grow deep into the nerve and generate a lot of pain. And in those cases, of course, you're going to need an emergency root canal. In other instances, you could develop an infection. Then your nerve can become swollen. And the swelling of your nerve is going to give you a lot of pain. Also, swelling and inflammation in those cases are going to require an emergency root canal.
