Dr. Paola Suglio

Why is dental health important?

Dental health is very important because it's a part of your body. Healthy gums and healthy teeth are going to, of course, contribute to your overall health.

Our teeth, our mouth, and our gums are connected with our entire system, with our heart, with our kidneys, and of course, a healthy diet that is low in sugar and low in carbs is going to help you have healthy oral health.

What does a healthy dental routine look like?

A healthy dental routine is going to be brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing your teeth, and, of course, together with that goes what kind of diet you have. If you have a high-sugar, high-carbohydrate diet, the acidity of your saliva is most likely going to help develop some cavities and gum disease.

In addition, I strongly recommend visiting your dentist for your checkups and dental cleanings.

What are the most common dental problems you see as a dentist?

The most common dental problems are cavities and gum disease. Dry mouth I see a lot because when patients take a lot of medications, a lot of medications are related to dry mouth.

Also, patients in pain can have an abscess, they can have an infection, and those are the main reasons that patients request our services. The good news is that most of them are preventable, and besides that, we're here to help you take care of those problems.

What kind of dental services do you provide at Palm and Pearl Dental?

Services that a dentist provides range from regular dental checkups, dental X-rays, CBCTs, exams for patients, dental emergencies, root canals, dental implants, surgeries, extractions, cavities, dental crowns, smile designs, dental veneers, and so on. Also, treating TMJ with Botox helps patients who are clenching and grinding. These are all part of the wide range of services a dentist can provide.

How long do dental exams and procedures take?

Dental exams take time, depending on what your visit is. If you're coming to the office as a new patient, it might be a little bit longer appointment. I would say a 90-minute appointment because we dedicate the time to you. We want to know you. We want to listen to your dental needs. Besides that, we're going to do a thorough examination that includes a clinical exam, a dental X-ray, and, of course, a periodontal exam. We're going to discuss with you your dental needs, if there are any concerns, and then we're going to accommodate all of that to your needs.

If you're coming for a regular routine dental cleaning, the appointment might be 60 minutes, where sometimes you need an exam, and sometimes you don't need an exam. Also, if you have healthy gums, it's going to be a quick appointment. If you need gum therapy, it might take a little bit longer, but routine visits are around that time.

If you come in for a dental crown, usually it's 90 minutes. For a root canal, the same. It all depends on the length of your procedure that is going to determine what kind of time you're going to spend here in the office.

What I can tell you is that we're never in any hurry. We dedicate the time for you to listen. Our full attention is on you to make sure not only I, but my staff, are going to make sure that you're comfortable and that you feel good coming to see us here at Palm and Pearl Dental.

How often should I go and see the dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends the patient come to a dental office for regular checkups every 6 months. However, if you have gum disease, we recommend between three or four months in between, depending on the patient's condition specifically.

What is a routine dental cleaning?

A routine dental cleaning is what we call a prophylaxis. A prophylaxis is when your gums are healthy, when there is no gum disease. That is a routine dental cleaning.
